Jailed fish and chip boss bought lottery winner’s mansion for cash as he hid away more than a million pounds Fish and chip boss bought Roy Gibney’s former mansion in Barnoldy-Le-Beck near Grimsby Share The Brambles in Barnoldy-Le-Beck was bought for cash by Sadit Sabir, right, as part of a tax scam which netted him £1.4m. The fish and chip shop boss jailed for tax fraud bought a lottery winner’s woodland mansion with £600,000 in cash.
Sadit Sabir used cash including takings from his three chip shops in Grimsby and Cleethorpes to fund a millionaire’s lifestyle, including buying the luxury home once owned by lottery winner Roy Gibney.
The Brambles mansion in up-market Barnoldy-Le-Beck was bought by Sabir in February 2014 after being put on the market for £1m by Mr Gibney.
Court records show Sabir, 38, used £618,000 in cash to buy the house. The money came from three fish and chip shops, the Seaway in Cleethorpes and St James Fish Restaurant and Fish and Chik in Grimsby. Complete with its own gym and games room as well as a fishing lake, the dream home even had a pool with Mr Gibney’s winning lottery numbers etched on the bottom.
Mr Gibney had bought the house shortly after his £7.5m win in the summer of 1998 for £375,000 and invested heavily in the property.
Sabir then bought the Brambles in 2014 and transferred it to his father’s name to conceal the crime.
There is no suggestion his retired father knew about the scam. Mr Sabir snr had built up the family business after starting off as a factory worker and part time taxi driver before his son opened his first fish and chip shop in Grimsby in 2005.
Sabir was jailed for thee-and-a-half years on Friday after a lengthy police investigation into tax fraud. Owner of Seaway fish and chips in Cleethorpes, pictured, and St James Fish restaurant in Grimsby Sadit Sabir, right, was jailed for three-and-a-half years for fraud (Image: Grimsby Live)
Grimsby Crown Court heard Sabir had benefited from £1.4m of unpaid tax and VAT between 2009 and 2015. He used the money to buy a top of the range £60,000 Mercedes for his then wife and when police raided his home they discovered another £63,000 in cash stuffed inside a suitcase.
But the court records show the largest single tax fraud was buying the Brambles in February 2014.
The charge under the Proceeds of Crime Act, says: “On 21/2/2014 at Grimsby … concealed, disguised, converted, transferred or removed criminal property, namely £618,000, by means of using it in the purchase of The Brambles, Barnoldby-Le-Beck, Grimsby. View gallery
Land records show the Brambles was sold for £1.1m in October last year , four weeks before Sabir admitted the tax fraud in court. The house was one of the most expensive home bought in North East Lincolnshire in 2018.
Sabir’s jailing has thrown the future of his two remaining businesses into doubt , although both have continued to trade despite staff only discovering their boss’s crime on Friday. Sabir’s lawyer said it was likely both restaurants would close as a result of the sentence.
However, records show both Seaway and St James Fish Restaurant are profitable.
And despite claims in court that the Seaway, one of Cleethorpes best known chip shops, had been hit by competition from Papas one the Seafront, both are likely to attract potential new owners. Read More
